With the summer almost over, it means that the venerable Festival of Nouveau Cinema (the FNC) is just around the corner, which makes it is a good time to turn our attention to the 2020 Festival of Nouveau Cinema, which for the first time in its 49 years followed the pattern set by festivals the world over by taking its festival online. This issue dedicates three articles to covering the festival, beginning with Frédèric St-Hilaire’s general overview report of the festival. The next two pieces by myself and Douglas Buck focus on two of the several retro titles which are always welcome by Montreal cinephiles, the seminal Quebec political docu-drama Les Ordres (1974, Michel Brault), and the American independent gem, Out of the Blue (1980, Dennis Hopper). The other festival sharing the spotlight this issue is The Telluride Film Festival, which Offscreen has been covering for many years. We welcome with this report writer/artist Janina Ciezadlo. Concluding the issue (and continuing the Montreal connection) is a thoughtful review of Xavier Dolan’s Matthias et Maxime (2019) by Sucheta Chakraborty. (Donato Totaro, ed.)
PS: And as an ‘addendum’ to this issue is a link to Frédèric St-Hilaire’s report of the 2019 edition of FNC, which ran originally as a stand alone article in October 2020 FNC 2019: Festival Report.
